The pine trees

The pines are the heart of Skogskyrkogården.

The pine forest at Skogskyrkogården was planted by the previous owners in the 1800s. The pines were intended to become good building material. Therefore, they are long and straight without side branches. Some pines are almost 200 years old.

Today, there are about 9,000 of the old pines left. Each tree is important and carefully cared for to stand as long as possible. Old trees must sometimes be removed due to age but also various diseases. To prevent the forest from becoming too sparse, new small pines are planted. They are grown from seeds taken from the cones of the best pines. It will take at least 80 years for the new pines to grow as tall as the old ones.
